WASHINGTON (TNND) — The Supreme Court starts its new term on Monday, with the nine justices focusing on high-profile cases to kick off its opening session.
The first day focuses on cases, such as a dispute over a criminal defendant’s right to consult with his lawyer during an overnight break in his testimony. The judge in a Texas murder trial ordered defense lawyers not to talk to their client about his testimony.
Pivotal cases on voting and the rights of LGBTQ people are also on the agenda. On Tuesday, the justices will hear arguments over bans passed by nearly half of U.S. states on therapy aimed at changing sexual orientation or gender identity.
Justices will also hear a case about redistricting practices that could largely affect the 2026 election cycle and potentially change the precedent set by the 1965 Voting Rights Act.
Over the next 10 months, the Supreme Court will evaluate President Donald Trump’s use of executive power.
